Ms-Dos stands for “Microsoft Disk Operating System” which is marked by Microsoft Corporation form U.S.A. It is single user and single tasking operating system. It is command based operating system.

 

There are two types of command in Ms-Dos: -

Ø Internal Command

Ø External Command 

 

Internal Command: -These commands are loaded in the computer system is called Internal Command.

 

There are many type of internal command:-

Ex à copy con, CLS, type, time, date, DIR, REN, VOL, VER, MK DIR, PATH, RMDIR, Exit, for, go to etc.

 

External Command: - This command not built into the system because those command are after between the versions of ms-dos.

              

                   When you type on built external command than you have to define the path of external command. This command loaded into hard disk.

 

There are many types of external command:-

Ex à EDIT, ATTRIB, CHKDSK, APP end, label etc.

                                                   

How to start MS - DOS if your operating system is windows 7: -

1.     First of all boot the system.

2.     Then click on start button.

3.     Click on all program.

4.     Click on Accessories.

5.     Click on Command Prompt.

               OR

1.     Press start button + R (run)

2.     Type CMD or Command

3.     Click on OK

       i.            Copy con command:-This command is used to create a new file in ms-dos

          Syntax: -     c:/> copy con < file name > press enter

                    ----------------TEXT----------------Press F6 & press enter

Ex: -            c:/> copy con Quantum press enter

                   “It is the best institute of Computer” Press F6 & press enter

                   1 file (s) copied.

Note: To save the file use F6 button or ctrl+z then press enter

 

     ii.            Type command:-  This command allows to view the contents of created file on the screen.

Syntax:-      c:/>type < file name >enter

          Ex:-             c:/>type Quantum enter

                             It shows the content of Quantum file.

 

  iii.            Dir Command:-  This command is used to display all the directories and files.

          Syntax:-     c:/> Dir press enter button.

          Ex.                       c:/> Dir Press enter button.

 

  iv.            CLS Command :- This command is used to clear the screen.

          Syntax:-     c:/> cls Press enter button.

          Ex.                       C:/> cls  Press enter button.

 

     v.            Delete command:-  This command is used to delete the files.

          Syntax:-     c:/> del < file name > enter

          Ex.             c:/> del Quantum enter button.

 

  vi.            Rename command:- This command is used to change the name of any file with new file name.

          Syntax:-     c:/> REN < old file name > < new file name > Press enter button.

Ex :-            c:/>  REN  Quantum  India press enter.

It changes the old file name Quantum with a new file name India.

       i.            Date command:- This command display the current system date. And also set the date.

          Syntax:-     c:/> date Press enter button.

          Ex :-           c:/> Date Press enter button.

         

          The Current date is: Sat 07/02/2016

          Enter the new date: (mm-dd-yy)      

 

     ii.            Time command:- This command is used to display the current system time. And set the time. The time is enter in the format.  ( hh:mm:ss )

          Syntax:-     c:/> Time Press enter

          Ex :-           c:/>Time Press enter.

                             The current time is :15:29:29.97

                             Enter The new time:

 

  iii.            Copy command :- This command is used to create a duplicate file of existing file with a new name.

           Syntax:-    c:/> copy < source file name > < destination file name >

           Ex :-                    c:/> Copy India Bharat Press enter.

 

 

  iv.            Combine  Command:- This command is used to combine the contents of more than one files within a new file.

           Syntax:-    c:/> copy < file+file2+file3………> < new file name> enter

           Ex :-                    c:/> copy  A1+A2+A3 AAA Press enter.

 It will combine the contents of all three files ( A1+A2+2A3) with in a new file AAA.

 

     v.            VER command:- This command is display the current version of window where you currently working.

Syntax :-     c:/> VER

          Ex:-             c:/> VER Press enter button.  

          Microsoft Windows [6.1.7600]

 

  vi.            VOLUME command:- This  internal command which is used to display the current volume name and serial number of current drive. But we cannot change the volume name and serial number of that drive.

         

Syntax:-      c:/> VOL

          Ex:-             c:/> Vol Press enter

          Volume in drive c is India

          Volume Serial Number is 5E2D-F405

 

vii.            Prompt command:-  it is an internal command of ms-dos which used to change the appearance of ms-dos prompt.

                It also provides the facility to change the appearance of command prompt in to our specified text.

          Syntax:-      c:/>prompt Text / Parameter

          Ex:-             c:/>prompt  India press enter

           IndiaPrompt $q press enter

           =prompt $p$g press enter

             Some parameter are used with command prompt

1.     $bà It is used to change the appearance of command prompt in piping symbol (I)

2.     $cà It is used to change the appearance into blinking cursor.

3.     $dà It is used to change the appearance into current date.

4.     $eà It is used to change the appearance into escape character.

5.     $gà It is used to change the appearance into greater than symbol.

6.     $hà It is used to change the appearance into backspace character.

7.     $là It is used to change the appearance into smaller than symbol.

8.     $nà It is used to change the appearance into current drive (c:).

9.     $pà It is used to change the appearance into current drive (c:/).

10.                                     $qà It is used to change the appearance into equal to symbol (=).

11.                                     $và It is used to change the appearance into current version.

Ex -> C:/> prompt  $ d  ( 11/07/07 prompt $P$G.

PASSWORD

It is the security feature of ms-dos, which helps the user about protect his ms-dos files and after using this internal command we cannot open without enter true password.

 

          Syntax:- c:/> copy con <file name with alt+combination of number>

          Ex :- c:/> copy con Raja alt+123

          we are Indian F6. Press enter

          one file(s) copied

for open protected files.

          Ex :- Type Raja alt+123 press enter button.

Note: - when we enter password computer will display that coding word number in symbols.

DIR:- It is like a cabinet or box which used to create for save file in separate location, to your file will save more than comparison to c-drive.

  For create a directory and save file you have to follow given command.

 

MD Command (Make a Directory):- This command is used to create the directory or sub directory.

There are following parts of windows screen: -

 

Desktop: - All parts of windows screen are called desktop.

Start Button: - It display the left side of quick launch toolbar, consist of all programs.

Quick launch toolbar: - It display on the left side of the taskbar where available some program for frequently used.

Taskbar: - There are available at the bottom position of the desktop where available start button and time indicator is called taskbar. We can move taskbar in any side like left, right, top & bottom.

 

How to move the taskbar in any side?

WordPad is word processor program where user can create a letter, notes and official document and user can format that document like Bold, Italic, underline, inserting picture, text color, bullet style etc.

The extension of WordPad is “.DOC” (Document) or “.RTF” (Rich Text Format).

 

Features of WordPad: -

Ø Picture can insert in the document.

Ø It provides zooming facility.

v Ruler: - The ruler is located below the ribbon. It is used to change the format of your document quickly.

v Status bar: - It displays the above of taskbar which display the information about Number button, caps lock button.

v Zoom: - It is used to increase and decrease the page of your document. We can maximize the size up to 500% and minimum is 10%. The actual size is 100%.

Menu Button: - It display below of the control box. Which consists new, open, save, print and page setup option.

Cut (Ctrl + X): -It is used to move the selected text one location to another location.

Copy (Ctrl + C): -It is used to create duplicate of selected text.

Paste (Ctrl + V):- It is used to insert cut or copy text from the position of cursor point.

Format Painter: -It is used to copy formatting from one place and apply it to another place.

            Process

ü Select any formatted text

ü Click on home tab

ü Click on format painter

ü Then MS-Word provide you brush

ü Select text where you want to apply formatting

Note: - You can apply format painter by double clicking on any words or sentenses in the document.

Font Face: - It is used to change the writing style.

Font Size: -It is use to increase or decrease the font size.

Grow Font (Ctrl + Shift + >):- It is used to increase the font size.

Shrink Font (Ctrl + Shift + <):- It is used to decrease the font size.

Change Case (Shift + F3):- It is used to change all the selected text to upper case, lower case or other.

            There are five cases in MS-Word: -

1.     Sentence case

2.     UPPER CASE

3.     lower case

4.     Capitalize Each Word Or Title Case

5.     tOGGLE cASE

ü Click on change case and select any case as you need

 

Clear Formatting: -It is used to clear all formatting from the selected text.

Bold (Ctrl + B):-It is used to make the selected text bold.

Italic (Ctrl + I):- It is used to make the selected text italic.

Underline (Ctrl + U):-It is used to make the selected text underline.

Under line Style: -It is used to set the underline style

Underline Color: - It is used to underline color.

Strikethrough:- It is used to draw a line through the middle of the selected text.

Subscript (Ctrl + =):- It is used to create the small letter below the text baseline.

Superscript (Ctrl + Shift + +): - It is used to create a small letter above the line of the text.

Text Effect: -It is used to apply visual effect such shadow, glow and reflection on selected text.

Text Highlight Color: -It is used to make the text highlighted with background color.

Font Color: -It is used to change the text color.

 

Font Dialog Box Launcher: - (Ctrl + D)

Double Strikethrough: -It is used to draw a line through the middle of the selected text but it display the double line from the middle.

Character Spacing: -It is used to change space between the characters.

Paragraph

Bullet and Numbering: -In MS-Word you can easily create bulleted or numbered list of items. Several bulleting and numbered styles are available.

ü Define new bullet

ü Click on symbol and picture

ü Select any symbol

Decrease indent: -It is used to decrease the indent level of the paragraph.

Increase indent: -It is used to increase the indent level of the paragraph.

Sort: -It means arrange the data in the form of ascending and descending order.

ü Check header row option

ü Click on sort by and select your field name

ü Check ascending or descending option

ü Click on ok

Alignment: -MS-Word provides four types of alignment: -

Left (Ctrl + L or Ctrl + Q): -It is used to align text to the left

Center (Ctrl + E):- It is used to align text to the center.

Right (Ctrl + R):-It is used to align text to the right.

Justify (Ctrl + J):-It is used to align text to both the left and right margin adding extra space between words as necessary.

Line spacing: -It is used to change the space between two or more lines.

Shading: -Shading means fill the color for the background of select text and paragraph.

Border: -It is used to customize the border of the selected text. The border and shading toolbar allow you to edit a border in terms of style.

                        There are two types of border in MS-Word:-

Page Border: -It is used to define the border around the page.

Paragraph Border: -There are two types of Paragraph border: -

v Paragraph: -It means apply the border in paragraph.

v Text: -It means apply the border for selected text only.

There are two different method of insert table

            Draw Table: - In this method MS-Word provide a pencil and user can draw table according to need.

            Insert Table: -This method guideline the user to create structure of table. In this method user needs only define no. of rows and columns and MS-Word provide a table automatically.

Merge Cell: -It is used to merge the selected cells into one cell

Repeat Header Row: -It is used to repeats heading in every page in the document.
